Over 100 million Americans suffer from some form of digestive disease. In fact, more Americans are hospitalized due to diseases of the digestive tract and Colon than for any other group of disorders. It is estimated that the total cost in lost work, lost wages, and medical bills is over $50 billion per year.
What are these diseases of the Colon?
- Constipation and the attendant symptoms of self detoxification
- Diverticular disease (herniations of the Colon)
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome
- Ulcerative Colitis
- Crohn's Disease
It is worth noting that many other diseases (that at first glance appear to have no connection with the digestive tract) have actually been related by many doctors to functional bowel disorder. These include:
- Diabetes
- Gall Stones
- Kidney Stones
- Gout
- Heart Disease
- Hypertension
- Varicose Veins
- Rheumatoid Arthritis
- Psoriasis
- Obesity
And as if that were not enough, it has been estimated that as many as 80% of all Americans are afflicted with intestinal parasites. Symptoms associated with such infestations include:
- Nervousness
- Grinding of the teeth at night
- Aches and pains that move from place to place in the body
- Mimicked Appendicitis
- Ulcers and various Digestive Pain
- Nausea or Diarrhea
- Itching
- Acne
- Foul breath
- Furred tongue
- Jaundice
- Fatigue
- Menstrual Irregularities
- Insomnia
And finally, more and more doctors are becoming aware of how endemic yeast infections such as Candida Albicans are. Symptoms associated with candidiasis include:
- Chronic fatigue (especially after eating)
- Depression
- Bloating
- Gas
- Cramps
- Chronic diarrhea or constipation
- Rectal itching
- Allergies
- Severe PMS
- Impotence
- Memory loss
- Severe mood swings
- Recurrent fungal infections (such as athlete's foot)
- Extreme sensitivity to chemicals (perfumes, smoke, odors, etc.)
- A feeling of being lightheaded or drunk after minimal wine, beer, or certain foods.
Have we frightened you? We hope so. The situation is serious. Diseases of the digestive system have reached an all time high in the United States and are still on the rise. The number one cancer among men and women together is Colon Cancer. This is shocking! But it's even worse than it sounds.
According to the Merck Manual (the medical industry's standard text for the diagnosis and treatment of disease written by the nations leading medical doctors and one of the world's biggest drug manufacturers), the incidence of diverticulosis has increased dramatically over the last 40 years. (Diverticula are herniated sacs that protrude through the wall of the Colon. These pockets fill with old fecal material which can be reabsorbed back into the bloodstream.) The 1950 edition of the Merck Manual stated that only 10% of adults over the age of 45 had this disease; the 1955 edition noted that it had climbed to 15%; in 1972 it had doubled to 30%, in 1987 to 40%; and in the 1992 edition (the sixteenth and most recent edition) it states that by old age, "EVERY PERSON HAS MANY." In other words, virtually 100% of all American adults will eventually have diverticulosis of the large intestine. This is astounding!! And it is unacceptable!!!
Why Has This Happened?
Our modern lifestyle has taken its toll on our digestive/elimination organs. Refined, processed, low fiber foods, animal fats, a lack of exercise, and an ever increasing level of stress all contribute to our current gastro-intestinal health crisis.
There has been a great misconception among the public and most medical professionals about how often a normal healthy person should move their bowels. For years, doctors have thought that anywhere from one bowel movement a day, to one a week, was normal. In an examination of more primitive peoples, we find that their bowels move much more frequently -- two to three times daily on the average. This is due to the fact that these people eat better, get more fiber in their diet, get more exercise, and have much less stress. What we have learned is that it is normal to have one bowel movement a day for each meal you eat. If you eat three meals, you should have three bowel movements!
Many great natural healers in the past such a Dr. John Christopher, Dr. Bernard Jensen, Dr. Randolf Stone, Norman Walker, Paavo Airola, and many others have promoted the value of having more frequent bowel movements and also doing regular bowel cleansing. They also warned us about constipation causing "bowel pockets." They said that we would store old fecal matter in these pockets, and this would eventually leak, causing toxemia, infection, and numerous other diseases. Medical doctors laughed and ridiculed them, called them quacks and said this was nonsense.
It seems that many doctors do not read their OWN books. The Merck Manual (the doctors book), specifically states that the treatment for this bowel disease should be with herbal products (Psyllium Seeds), fiber (Bran), and a diet high in whole grains, vegetables and fruit! If your doctor says that bowel cleansing programs are a waste of time, foolish, or even dangerous, he flies in the face of all current understanding -- both in conventional and naturopathic medicine.
Consider that a sluggish bowel can retain pounds of old toxic and poisonous fecal matter (10 to 20 pounds is not unusual, and up to 65 pounds has actually been reported). Many times the real cause behind sickness and disease is this retention and reabsorption of built up toxic waste.
This is why the first step in any health program should be stimulating, cleaning, and toning all of the elimination organs, but especially the bowel. Before you do any other type of Detoxification or Ceansing it is extremely important to make sure your bowel is clean and functioning. It is the best place to begin.
Most people find that after their bowel has been cleansed, many (or even all) of their complaints are gone.
The First Step To Optimum Health
People commonly ask, "Where do I begin? What is the first step I should take in turning my health around?"
The first step in ANY health program should be to make sure ALL of the elimination organs are clean and properly functioning.
There are 5 major Elimination Organs, the Colon (large intestine), the Kidneys, the Liver, the Lungs and the Skin. Each of these organs is designed to accumulate, remove, and expel waste from your body. All five of these systems must be kept in clean and efficient operating condition in order for you to enjoy the benefits of good health. You change the oil in your car periodically to keep it running smoothly and avoid mechanical failure. This is preventative maintenance. We suggest the same preventative care for your body by seasonal cleansing and detoxification of your elimination organs.
We often get letters from people who began a cleansing or detoxification program only to find themselves in pain, anguish, and feeling miserable within a few hours. Why? They skipped the first step -- cleansing their elimination organs.
Cleansing and detoxification programs are designed primarily to rid the body of poisons. Accumulated toxins, drug residues, pollution, insecticides, pesticides, heavy metals, even radioactive material is flushed from out fat cells and other tissues. This toxic, poisonous material eventually makes its way to our elimination organs.
If our elimination organs are blocked or poorly functioning, this material may be reabsorbed right back into your body in a more concentrated form and at a much faster rate than you were originally exposed. Not only will this make you feel sick, it is very dangerous.
In order to do a safe and effective detoxification of the entire body you must first clean and strengthen all of your elimination organs. If you do this first, you will enjoy your detoxification. It wil be fun (no kidding). And you will feel great! The best place to begin is with the colon.
How Do I Clean And Detoxify My Colon?
Any program designed to clean and detoxify the Colon needs to address several key areas. The program must:
-
Help bring the Colon back to life by stimulating the muscle movement of the Colon
-
Include a bowel stimulant designed to move matter forward through the system
-
Halt putrefaction
-
Draw old fecal matter of the walls of the Colon and out of any bowel pockets
-
Disinfect
-
Draw out poisons and toxins
-
Help leach out heavy metals such as Strontium 90
-
Soothe and promote the healing of the mucous membrane lining of the entire digestive tract
-
Help stimulate the body to begin the healing and repair of herniated areas
-
Increase the flow of bile to help clean the gall bladder, bile ducts and liver
-
Promote Healthy Intestinal Flora
-
Destroy Candida Albicans overgrowth
-
Maintain Regularity
-
Decrease Straining
-
Speed up the transit time of feces through the large intestine
Once you look at the requirements of a good Intestinal Program, it's easy to see that no one formula or magic pill can accomplish it all. What we recommend is a three-pronged approach.
